Driving Research Translation: Connecting Academia and Industry

5 Dec 2025

On 30 October 2025, the UQ Dow Centre for Sustainable Engineering Innovation hosted an interactive Research Translation Workshop at the Andrew N. Liveris Building. The event brought together researchers, industry leaders, and technology transfer experts to explore practical strategies for turning innovative research into real-world solutions.

The workshop opened with an engaging Research–Industry Collaboration Masterclass led by Leigh Staines. This session focused on project scoping and management, equipping participants with tools to navigate the complexities of industry partnerships.

A highlight of the afternoon was the Panel Discussion: Bridging Academia and Industry, featuring distinguished experts:

  • Mr Benn Wheeler - Director of Business Development at Low Emission Technology Australia
  • Dr Tao Li - Director of Strategy & Development at the International Water Association
  • Leigh Staines - Industry Advisor, Resources Technology & Critical Minerals Trailblazer & Managing Director, Banksia Minerals Processing
  • Dr E-Jen Teh - Senior Associate at UniQuest
  • Mr Benn Wheeler and Dr Tao Li brought global perspectives, sharing trends and opportunities shaping collaboration between academia and industry, while highlighting key differences between Australia and other parts of the world. Leigh Staines offered a unique dual viewpoint, drawing on her experience as both a researcher and an industry partner, while Dr E-Jen Teh added a personal dimension, reminding researchers to ask an important question: Does commercialisation align with your own goals and values?

The event concluded with networking over afternoon tea for participants to connect and explore future collaborations.
